Safety Training

All Detector Development Laboratory (DDL) users must complete extensive training in the hazards of this workplace. A typical orientation will include training on:

  • Hazard communication
  • The chemical hygiene plan for the DDL
  • The emergency action plan
  • Gas safety
  • Electrical safety
  • General laboratory safety
  • Hazardous material safety
  • The lockout/tagout procedure

Safety training also will include review of the safety manual, a briefing on proper clean room protocols, and instruction on the proper type (and how to wear) personal protective equipment. In addition, everyone must participate in a laboratory walk-through with the safety officer and/or laboratory manager, prior to being authorized to work in the DDL.

Equipment Training

After being authorized to work in the DDL by the safety officer and/or laboratory manager, each DDL user must be trained on specific equipment necessary to that individual's work. Each DDL equipment item has an assigned owner, responsible for ensuring that anyone working with the equipment has been thoroughly trained to use it. Once a person is trained and checked by the equipment owner or a designee known as a 'super user', that individual becomes a certified user for that equipment.

Even with this level of training, the new user is monitored by a trained user for a month or more to ensure they have a complete understanding of how to use the equipment.
